What to Expect
The basics: Two teams each protect a flag on opposite ends of a large grassy field while trying to capture the other team’s flag and bring it back to their side. Players tagged in enemy territory are temporarily “frozen” until a teammate tags them free. Teams will be mixed by age so older and younger players can work together.
Physical activity: The game involves running, walking, and quick changes of direction across a grassy area with hills and trees. Players set their own pace: there’s no requirement to run, and strategic roles (guarding, directing teammates) are just as valuable as speed. That said, the terrain is uneven natural grass with trees, paths, and playground equipment and is not paved or fully flat.
Accessibility notes: Players who use mobility aids or prefer lower-intensity participation are warmly welcome, though please be aware that the grass surface may present some challenges for wheels or uneven footing. Kids should expect directions from staff members or team captains and will be expected to respect all gameplay rules. If you have specific questions about whether this event is a good fit for your child, please reach out to us at snall@decorahlibrary.org or lsmith@decorahlibrary.org .
What to bring: Athletic/closed toed shoes, water bottle, weather and movement-appropriate clothing, bug spray and sunscreen.
Duration: Plan for approximately 1.5 hours, including a rules explanation at the start.
