Cookbook Book Group

Decorah Public Library staff is launching a brand new book group focused on cookbooks and food. The Cookbook Book Group will meet via Zoom on Thurs. April 15 at 7 PM and Thurs. May 13 at 7 PM to discuss Nik Sharma’s “The Flavor Equation.” The Cookbook Book Group is open to the public, but space is limited, so registration is required. Register by emailing Zach Row-Heyveld ( or calling 563-277-5185. Register before March 21st to reserve a copy of the book. Funds for multiple copy sets were generously provided by Friends of Decorah Public Library.

Named one of the best cookbooks of 2020 by The New York Times, NPR,, Food & Wine, Saveur, and many others, “The Flavor Equation” explores how to coax the most flavor out of pantry staples through over 100 inventive, but approachable recipes. Each chapter focuses on one of seven flavor notes – brightness, bitterness, saltiness, sweetness, savoriness, fireiness, and richness – with techniques for using them to boost flavor in a wide variety of globally inspired recipes. Sharma’s background in molecular biology comes through in his explanations of the science that happens in the kitchen and his stunning photos of each dish are nothing short of mouthwatering.

The Cookbook Book Group will spend two meetings on each cookbook. The first meeting will be a chance for participants to share first impressions of the cookbook, their favorite and least favorite recipes so far and other general observations. The second meeting will go into more depth and discussion about recipes participants have gone back to more than once and techniques and ideas they’ve incorporated into their everyday cooking. Once the library is in the Rainbow Zone of the Pandemic Response Plan and fully open to the public, this second meeting will be a potluck where participants share food they’ve made from the cookbook and discuss the recipes.
