Friday Book Group: The Comfort of Crows

Decorah Public Library staff are hosting five book discussions in September. The groups are open to the public and newcomers are encouraged to attend. Anyone interested should call the library at 382-3717 to learn more or to reserve a book. Email ktorresdal@decorahlibrary.org to be added to any of the five groups’ email distribution lists. Funds for multiple copy sets were generously provided by Friends of Decorah Public Library.

The Friday Book Group will meet on the 2nd floor of the library Fri. Sept. 20 at 2:00 p.m. to discuss Margaret Renkl’s “The Comfort of Crows.” In “The Comfort of Crows,” Renkl presents a literary fifty-two chapters that follow the creatures and plants in her backyard over the course of a year. As we move through the seasons—from a crow spied on New Year’s Day, its resourcefulness and sense of community setting a theme for the year, to the lingering bluebirds of December, revisiting the nest box they used in spring—what develops is a portrait of joy in the ongoing pleasures of the natural world, and grief over winters that end too soon and songbirds that grow fewer and fewer. Along the way, we also glimpse the changing rhythms of a human life. Grown children, unexpectedly home during the pandemic, prepare to depart once more. And the natural world, now in visible flux, requires every ounce of hope and commitment from the author—and from us.
