Notes from the Border

The Decorah Public Library is excited to announce a thought-provoking and compassionate presentation, “Notes from the Border,” taking place on March 6th at 6:30 PM in the library’s mezzanine. This event is free and open to the public.

Presented by Scott Boylen, a local educator and volunteer, “Notes from the Border” will shed light on a critical humanitarian crisis unfolding at the United States’ southern border. This program aims to foster understanding and empathy, focusing on the human beings involved and their challenging experiences, rather than engaging in political discourse.

Scott Boylen, a respected 6th-grade science teacher at Decorah Middle School with 18 years of teaching experience, will share his first-hand experiences and observations from his time volunteering with the Humane Borders organization. During his winter break, Scott dedicated eight days to work in and around Ajo, Arizona, providing basic needs and water to migrants, most of whom are asylum seekers, at the border near Lukeville within the Organ Pipe National Monument.

“Notes from the Border” is more than just a presentation; it’s a journey into the lives of those crossing the border and the complexities they face. Scott will be sharing powerful images and stories, offering a unique perspective that goes beyond the headlines.

The Decorah Public Library is proud to host this event that comes from a place of compassion and hope. In line with our commitment to respectful and meaningful discourse, we emphasize that hateful comments and behavior will not be tolerated during this event.

Please join us for an evening of learning, empathy, and understanding. It’s an opportunity to see beyond the news and into the hearts of people experiencing one of the most challenging journeys of their lives.
