Book Discussion “Troubled Water: A Journey Around the Black Sea”

Decorah Public Library is holding a book discussion of Jens Mühling’s new book “Troubled Water: A Journey Around the Black Sea” on Tuesday May 17 from 6-7 p.m. Discussion of the book will be facilitated by Dr. Orçun Selçuk, Luther College Political Science professor.

“Troubled Water” is a travelogue through all nine countries that border the Black Sea. Mühling weaves together the history of the Black Sea, from the ancient Greeks to Russia’s annexation of the Crimean Peninsula in 2014 with interviews, stories, and profiles of the diverse cast of characters who call the Black Sea home.

“’Troubled Water’ has a little bit for everyone,” says Zach Row-Heyveld, Administrative Coordinator at Decorah Public Library. “For those who’ve been hemmed in by pandemic travel restrictions, it’s a rollicking armchair travelogue around the Black Sea. For those who’ve been following Russia’s war in Ukraine, it’s a way to explore the larger cultural and political context of that invasion. We’re also excited to partner with Dr. Selçuk to help guide our discussion of the book and exploration of the region.”

Dr. Orçun Selçuk is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at Luther College. He is originally from Turkey and will help facilitate the discussion about the book. He’ll help participants dive deeper into the background of Turkey’s role in the Black Sea and the rise of populism in the region.

The library has 12 copies of the book available for check out. Stop by the library’s front desk to pick up a copy or call 563.382.3717 or email dpl@decorahlibrary.org to place a copy on reserve. For more information, please contact Zach Row-Heyveld at zrow-heyveld@decorahlibrary.org
